Day One (5/23)

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: amazing interactive projections. His use of washing out the projections with a bright light and the pictures being “revealed” by the viewer’s shadows is brilliant.

Immersive Interactive Virtual Reality in the Museum by Maria Roussou. Informative on a straight forward level, but didn't provide any new information.

Virtual Reality installation art that is only accessible from a phone (Android, iPhone) when standing at the site: http://thefamilyvacationist.blogspot.com/2011/04/virtual-reality-art-projects-for.html

I can't take credit for this one, Carly found it first. Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan. Interactive/Immersive Exhibit at the Sackler Gallery, DC: http://www.asia.si.edu/exhibitions/current/xiangtangshan.asp

  1. I am very interested in the exhibit at the Sackler gallery, so let's keep an eye out for any other events in D.C. we might be interested in, and then find a time to make a trip down together!

  2. I love the Lozano-Hemmer projection. so simple and elegant! haha it reminds me of the street art people do in NYC with chalk and shadows but this is the opposite...sort of. I love playing with the lighting so this made me super happy :D
using the audience's shadow to reveal another person is pretty brilliant. it sort of lets you 'stand in someone else's shoes' but almost literally... like we could do something similar but instead of just a still portrait, have some sort of animation of a traditional weaver, etc. working at her loom (?) and when the visitor sits down on a chair, he/she would be able to see the weaver working. rough idea. not sure if i'm explaining it right but it looks cool in my head haha.

this philadelphia arts festival already happened, correct? it looks like their work with the smart phones is similar to what we're trying to do? I think the job professor badler wants me to do is to bring the gallery to the public through these types of technology...? so this AR (augmented reality) is what we are doing? it would've been cool to go visit this. :T

for the Buddhist cave temples, how did they project the Buddha head onto the rest of the body...? that's pretty cool though. using tech to exhibit & enhance historical artifacts~

(it's pretty lonely being the only person in this half of the room haha)
